Wokefield Park, Reading

Governing Bodies – The FA
Site – Wokefield Park Reading
[Devere Hotels]
Brief – To carry out feasibility study on playability of existing playing surfaces to establish Wokefield park as a football coaching facility
Timescale – Late 2009- present [completion was scheduled for end of 2010]
Overview – The Institute of Groundsmanship was   called in  by the FA to look at the feasibility of using existing playing surfaces. This included a site visit. The site contained two existing pitches, which were used as an ‘add on’ for hotel  guest use. The surfaces were undulating [almost corrugated] and were not fit for use for coaching. The project included working with Turftrax Grounds Management Systems, which used the innovative electromagnetic scanning system [this identifies soil density and produces a 3-D map of the ground] tohelp establish what type of soil is present, enabling accurate determination of the works required. The Institute of Groundsmanship provided a report and a specification of works and materials for the upgrading of the pitches. The work was carried out in early March and currently the pitches are in use by the FA for high-level coaching courses.
